GEL’s Community and Engagement Officer, Claudia Malam, was a winning nominee this month for the annual Cornwall Chamber of Commerce ‘30 under 30’ award. Nominated for her work with education providers and in the community, Claudia’s achievement recognised her special talent for making ideas feel accessible and exciting, especially for young people. In addition, providing opportunities for young people to engage in work experience with real and practical skills.
Claudia said: “We do a lot of work with alternative provision education, and we are well known for leading the way with inclusive education. It is important that all young people feel encouraged to pursue the future they want, and that is where we excel, helping them feel empowered, confident and capable.”
Community engagement and education has always been a critical part of the work that GEL has undertaken as it has developed into becoming the UK’s first geothermal power company. GEL now generates electricity from geothermal resources as well as producing low-carbon lithium.
Since 2018, our community engagement & education team, led by Jane Charman, have visited and hosted site visits for more than 200 schools speaking to over 12,000 pupils and students from primary schools to universities. The team is a leading collaborator in the piloted launch of an updated approach to work experience, an initiative led by government, which sees changes to number of days and type of work experience undertaken by secondary school children.
