GEL is a leading developer of geothermal projects and critical mineral extraction.
GEL has pioneered a process that enables electricity and critical minerals to be extracted from the same geothermal brines.
In 2026, GEL became the first UK powerplant to successfully produce electricity from geothermal resources. Simultaneously, we opened the first UK ultra-low carbon lithium extraction plant which can produce up to 100tpa. From the site in United Downs, Cornwall, in the heart of the former mining region, GEL’s powerplant and Lithium Demonstration Plant are leading the way in producing domestic sources of lithium and geothermal as a renewable energy source.
Founded in 2008 by Dr Ryan Law, an expert geothermal engineer and consultant, GEL – originally known as Geothermal Engineering Limited – set out to prove that the UK could produce electricity from its geothermal resources. Through the process of establishing the UK’s first powerplant, GEL has maximised the commercial opportunity of deep geothermal brines, developing a symbiotic process that is almost zero-carbon, extremely low in water use and has minimal land use.
GEL’s future
With the UK trailing far behind much of the world on geothermal, GEL is demonstrating that the geothermal resources beneath our feet can provide renewable, 24/7 power, combined with low-impact access to critical minerals.
Our mission is to build and expand the UK geothermal sector, using the resources to meet the UK’s need to develop domestic and sustainable energy and critical mineral sources.
The skills, technology and expertise of the UK’s oil and gas industry have the potential to play a significant role in a growing geothermal sector, transitioning this skill into a renewable and 24/7 energy source.
