At GEL, one of the most rewarding aspects of helping to deliver the UK’s energy transition is not only generating renewable energy, but also inspiring young people to understand the exciting opportunities it will create for their future careers.
During Q2 2026, GEL’s Community Engagement & Education Team delivered nine education engagements across Cornwall, reaching more than 450 directly counted pupils and students from primary schools, secondary schools, colleges and universities. Through a range of STEM workshops, careers fairs, science and geography lessons, renewable energy presentations and industry collaborations, learners were introduced to the growing opportunities within geothermal energy, lithium extraction and the wider green economy.
Among the quarter’s highlights was engagement with 127 students from 11 schools through the Cornwall Schools Mining Games, alongside collaborative activities with valued education partners including the University of Exeter, Truro College, Falmouth University and Falmouth Marine School. These initiatives are helping to build awareness of the skills and careers that will be essential to supporting a low-carbon future.
GEL’s commitment to education extends beyond promoting green careers. The company is equally focused on ensuring that learning opportunities are accessible and inclusive for all young people. This commitment was reflected in July when members of our Community Engagement & Education Team attended Cornwall Council’s Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Forum.
The event brought together educators, support staff and organisations dedicated to helping young people thrive and reach their full potential. Discussions explored how more employers can be encouraged to engage with and support SEND young people, highlighting both the unique strengths they can bring to the workplace and the importance of creating greater opportunities for participation within industry.
